6 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE AMERICAN BULLY
THEY ARE NOT PIT BULLS
One of the most common misconceptions about the American Bully is that it is simply a type of pit bull, but the truth is these are two distinct breeds.
American bullies do come from pit bulls, but they have had other types of bully breeds mixed in so that they are no longer considered pit bulls, but have their own breed standards.
THEY COMES IN 4 RECOGNIZED SIZES
There are four different sizes of American bullies that are recognized by the ABKC:
Standard
Pocket
XL
Classic
THEY CAN LIVE 10 – 13 YEARS
As long as you take excellent care of them, your American bully could live between 10 and 13 years.
THIS BREED REQUIRES EXERCISE
Since the American Bully comes from working dogs, this breed has retained its abundance of energy. That means you need to be prepared to give them enough exercise that they don’t start to get bored.
Bored dogs often turn into destructive dogs.
AMERICAN BULLIES MAKE GREAT FAMILY DOGS
American bullies are one of the best examples of a perfect family dog. Loyal and loving, they’ve had aggressive behaviors intentionally bred out of them.
This makes them great family dogs, so you can rest assured that you’re not putting your children at risk by bringing one into your home.
AMERICAN BULLIES REQUIRE LITTLE GROOMING
They have a short, smooth coat that only needs to be quickly brushed once a week or so.
This is particularly good news for people that don’t have the time to devote to grooming their dog themselves or the money to regularly pay a groomer to take care of unruly fur.
Something to keep in mind, however, is that this fur type also can get cold easily in the winter. So if you live somewhere that has particularly cold winters, then you may need to put your bully in a sweater or jacket to go outside side when the temperature drops too far below freezing.

WHAT FOOD DO YOU RECOMMEND?
We strongly believe it’s a good idea for pet owners to stick with a high protein food with low fillers and either low or no grain. We use Victor High Pro Plus. This is high in fiber which is great for any animal.
When getting your new puppy try to stick with one diet and one type of treat for a while until your dog adapts to its new home and environment. If you do decide to change, make that change over several days adding a little more new food to the old. Making an abrupt change may cause your puppy issues either with the poops being abnormal or tummy issues.
ARE BULLYS GOOD WITH KIDS?
Yes. A well-breed bully should be exceptionally good with children. They are very tolerant in their ability to put up with the antics of small kids, and especially children with a lot of energy. Bullies calm presence helps kids play nicely, and if the dog’s feelings is too badly hurt, the bully will usually just get up and leave.
Bullies who have never encountered children may not understand them. In this case, barking and growling may indicate confusion and fear. I can not count the number of pictures of bullies in costumes we get from happy puppy customers whose bullies are the prime recipient of “dress up” time with the kids. I see bullies in every conceivable mode of attire, from tuxedos to princess dresses. Not only do the bullies put up with it — they seem to enjoy the whole thing!
Of course, no dog, bully or otherwise should ever be left unsupervised with small kids. Only dog who have a history of tolerance should ever be left alone with children and then only for short periods of time and only with gentle kids who will not intentionally or accidentally provoke an aggressive response from a dog.
WHAT ARE THE HEALTH ISSUES WITH THE BULLY
Although the breed is primarily considered healthy, there are some common American Bully health issues to consider.
Hip dysplasia, Elbow dysplasia, Heart disease, Allergies, Eye problems, Skin conditions, Hot Spots, Mange, Ear infections
We work very hard to ensure we are breeding out many of these problems. What you will find is some breeders only breed for a single trait often time not checking for any health issues. Before you purchase a puppy you should inspect the parents.
